When our lovable and somewhat scruffy dog, Olive, turned eight (thats 56 in dog years) this week, we decided she needed some extra attention. Since I am all about the blog these days everyone said, “Blog about organic dog treats this week”. So…here is what I concocted for Olive’s birthday, Bacon and Parsley Homemade Dog Biscuits – see printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. She LOVES them – because, who does not love bacon? neither man nor beast!!!
They were easy and actually very fun to make. I wanted to adapt a recipe that did not contain peanut butter since I have the idea to gift these biscuits to all of my dog loving friends but some of them have kids with peanut allergies. I found some fun dog themed cookie cutters, dog house, fire hydrant, bone, dog shape, and went to town. I think it would be really cute to figure out some sort of dog friendly frosting to make them even cuter, but the parsley helps give them a touch of color and texture until I figure the frosting thing out.
You can see in the pictures below that Olive got her birthday wish – Bacon Dog Biscuits!
I think she has a Homemade Dog Biscuit Hangover…
Uh oh…someone is jealous. I will have to think up some cat treats now…
Let me know how you pamper your pet or if you have any ideas on a solution for a jealous cat…
- 3 slices uncured bacon
- 2¼ cups whole wheat flour
- ½ cup toasted wheat germ
- ½ cup ground flax seed
- ½ cup nonfat dry milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1¼ cups low sodium chicken broth
- ⅓ cup chopped parsley
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 shallow baking sheets with parchment paper
- Cook the bacon until crisp and set aside to cool. Finely chop bacon
- Reserve 2 tablespoons of bacon fat
- Combine chopped bacon, whole wheat flour, wheat germ, ground flax seed and dry milk in medium bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together reserved bacon fat, egg, broth and parsley
- Mix the wet and dry ingredients together with wooden spoon or spatula until coarse dough forms
- Knead the dough several times until it comes together to form a ball
- Add more stock if you feel like the dough is not holding together well
- Turn dough out on to a lightly floured surface and roll out to ¼" thick disc
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes (like making cookies) - reassembling dough scraps and rolling out again to make more cut outs until all of the dough is used up
- Bake the dog cookies until lightly browned and pretty hard about 40-45 minutes
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely - they will harden more as they cool
- Store in an airtight container
- This recipe will make about 24-40 treats depending on the size of the cutters
